Some things you should know..... or might like to know

Do you use a 'USB' stick?
Maybe you know it as a 'flash drive', 'pen drive', or the coined brand name of a 'ThumbDrive', it;s know by many names. Unfortunately, there is a new worm targeting these USB Sticks.

The new worm called 'SillyFD-AA' looks for removable drives, such as USB memory sticks, floppy drives, and CD ROMs to create a hidden file (called 'autorun.inf') so that a copy of the worm will run the next time the drive is plugged in or automatically launches. .............................more info

Companies Cracking Down on MP3s
Do you download music, movies, etc...watch out, the RIAA is training its legal guns on companies to crack down on employees using streaming media and swapping MP3s.

Not only does the RIAA pose a legal threat to a company with employees downloading music or videos, the network the company provides is being saturated by downloads wasting company time and resources.

"Today's MP3 is just yesterday's Internet surfing, which was yesterday's sending e-mail to relatives, which was yesterday's putting the book under the table and reading."

First 'multi-platform' worm / virus
OpenOffice has it's first (proof of concept) virus.  This virus is multi- platform, as it will run on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Security company Sophos was sent the 'BadBunny malware' as proof, but admits that the virus has not been seen in the wild, yet.  At present this virus will do little more than try to spread while showing a pornographic picture.

However with this proof of concept existing, it will only be a matter of time before a worm / virus like this has a real effect. ..................more info

Reporting for Jury Duty - New Scam

AT&T Dumps VOIP Customers
In the past two weeks AT&T has sent out disconnect letters to VOIP customers in big rude red letters, stating that VOIP service will be suspended in 30 days and permanently disconnected in 60 days. They cited E911 service as the reason. (It is peculiar that AT&T is unable overcome an E911 technical hurdle, since SBC/AT&T is also the local land line company in many areas where VOIP cancellation notices are being received.) Many AT&T VOIP customers have found that they are unable to transfer their phone numbers to a new provider. Further, AT&T is unwilling to set up a forwarding message directing callers to a new phone number for those who are unable to transfer their old numbers. In effect, AT&T has told many long-term VOIP subscribers: 'We are turning off your phone in 30 days, goodbye.'"

*Our opinion - possibly AT&T wasn't prepared for the discontented VoIP users and the complaints may have been more than they were willing to deal with. VoIP is not the stable system that regular phone company land lines provide and many customers are unwilling to live with the negative side of VoIP, even with it's numerous benefits. So if you can't fix the problem, just shut it off.

Would you click to get a virus?
Security researcher Didier Stevens decided to try an experiment to see just how many people would.

He ran a pay-per-click ad on Google saying: "Is your PC virus-free? Get it infected here!"?

409 people out of 259,723 did!!

The ad campaign cost $23 in total, which works out to $0.06 per infection had the site actually been malicious."

Were they just naive or stupid?
